Featured Artist interview: Fun Fair (E40)

About: Fun Fair from Kiev, Ukraine

"Fun Fair’s approach is the same over the band’s career, preferring to play what they enjoy and do best. Their appreciation of early influences of classic rock and rock and roll is reflected in some of their occasional cover songs. Fun Fair’s lyrics typically cover such topics as alienation effect, strong feelings, lost in a big city, good versus evil, love affairs, la reverie, substance abuse, “life on the road”, age theme, joy of friendship and in general tend lo lean to positive and philosophic tones."

1). How much time do you spend writing, performing, and listening to music
each day?
Serhij (bass): 4 hours/day
Oleksiy (drums): music still is not my main job, so I do everything outside my working hours. And have a little time to sleep, meet some girls eh.
Nick (guitar): Writing - depending on mood, performing - mostly every night, during
rehearsals or gigs or at home while watching TV or when I have my
hands unoccupied :)  Listening to - mostly all day long...
Michael (vocals): 3-6 hours, depends on free time
Vlad (keyboards): It just keeps playing on and on in my head. Wish I had that much time to practice though.
2). What does your family think about your music?
Serhij: They like it very much.
Oleksiy: I don't believe, what my parents tell me about it :) They grew up with a completely different set of music, so my band activities may seem out of their measures. But my brother likes it, for sure.
Nick: Quite positive, they appreciate what I do.
Michael: My family understands my music, that's why they like it.
Vlad: They say: "Nice!" meaning "You won't make a millions out of it". Wrong.

3. What profession did you want to have when you were a child? Did you think that you would be a musician?
Serhij: Never had a clear vision. Indeed, a "musician" was one of the potential options.
Oleksiy: As a child I never thought of being a musician, dreaming to become a pilot. The 'musicianship' came later. I guess pilots and musicians have much in common, at least, they always 'kinda fly'.
Nick: No, I was dreaming of being space explorer, of course. I loved music
when I was a child, but I hated music school with all my heart, 'twas
a bore.
Michael: I wanted to be a spaceman and a musician. The second one was stronger :)
Vlad: My grandma used to tell me "Learn, play, some day you'll rely on that". I never thought she would be so right...

4).What mood is the best for you to be in for writing music?
Serhij: Moody :)
Oleksiy: No neutral mood allowed. Either a depressive or positive state are good enough to write music. A good time, when you're falling in love.
Nick: Sad and depressed, mostly. Gloomy songs are my speciality. I'd like to
know how to write something life-asserting, but I really don'n know
Michael: I do not care; every mood is musical for me.
Vlad: When you get that little bee flying in your head.

5). In three words, describe the emotional characteristics of your musical style.
Serhij: Elegant, tricky, catchy.
Oleksiy: Aesthetics, frustration, passion.
Nick: Energy, freedom, romantic.
Michael: Fight for better life.
Vlad: Joy, inspiration, overcoming.
