Featured Artist interview: Garfield Mayor (E41)

About: Garfield Mayor

"Whilst written, arranged and produced by himself, to bring the finishing touches to his vision Mayor called upon the mixing talents of Mike Spencer (Jamiroquai, Kylie, Newton Faulkner), as well as inviting some cameo performances from top session players Frank Romano (Justin Timberlake, Kanye West, Joss Stone), Clifford Carter (James Taylor/Bette Midler/Paul Simon) and Abe Fogle (Kelis, D'Angelo, Kool and the Gang)."

1). How much time do you spend writing, performing, and listening to music each day?
5-6 hours... At the moment 10% writing, 40% recording & producing, 5% performing... The rest is spent on the business side of things!

2). What does your family think about your music?
My Sister's always been a fan... My Mum & Dad are supportive but I don't think they really know what to make of it all - it's an alien business to them. Most important is my wife... Without her I wouldn't be writing this simple of that.

3). What profession did you want to have when you were a child? Did you think that you would be a musician?
I wanted to be a musician since the age of 18... Other ambitions have been professional skateboarder, professional cricket, fighter pilot... I know I'm such a dreamer!

4). What mood is the best for you to be in for writing music?
Happy and full of vigour... Though I can write reflectively on period of sorrow and sadness, whilst in the midst of those emotions i'm often paralysed. Also I find that inspiration comes at the most inopportune times... Late at night when I should get to bed/when I need to be somewhere but daren't tear myself away from my music in case the inspiration is lost forever!

5). In three words, describe the emotional characteristics of your musical style.
Trenchant, hopeful, intelligent
