Featured Artist interview: Martin McLaughlan (E41)

About: Martin McLaughlan

"Martin McLaughlan is a singer songwriter from Irvine, North Ayrshire. After spending several years in bands such as "Received", "A Tempo Above Your Heartbeat" and "Burying the Bled" he decided it was time to turn his hand to an acoustic solo project. With influences ranging from Dallas Green to Newton Faulkner and Eric Clapton, his music style is varied."

1). How much time do you spend writing, performing, and listening to music each day?
Most of my day, music is a massive part of my life. Whether I'm listening to it when I'm working, performing in the house or on stage or writing it generally takes up a massive part of my day

2). What does your family think about your music?
They like it, took them a while to realise that I was serious about it but they've been really supportive

3). What profession did you want to have when you were a child? Did you think that you would be a musician?
When I was younger I always thought I wanted to be a lawyer, then I left school and became a chef. I've always been interested in music, but I never thought I would write my own material and perform it for people.

4). What mood is the best for you to be in for writing music?
It varies, normally though I need to feel strongly about something, I can't write a song that has no meaning to me. Whether I'm in a cheery mood or quite emotional doesn't matter to me as long as I have a connection with what I'm writing.

5). In three words, describe the emotional characteristics of your musical style.
Heartfelt, Compassionate and Empathetic
