About: Andy O'Sullivan from Limerick, Ireland
He has been singing and playing in bands for over 15 years, mainly to the Irish community in the UK, before moving back to Ireland two and a half years ago.
Although a lot of Andy's musical influences draw from the Irish folk/rock and ballad styles of the Saw Doctors, The Waterboys, The Dubliners and Luke Kelly, his original material is more sharper and more diverse, drawing on rock and ska influences as well as the folk/rock style.
Having moved back to Ireland, Andy released a 15 track self-produced album in 2010 called 'Flight of Earls' - a tribute to the many Irish artists and songs that provided the inspiration for Andy's own career.
Andy is now concentrating heavily on songwriting and is busy writing and producing songs for a follow up album of original material for release at the end of 2011."
1). What musical instrument is the wildest/most fun to play on (from your point of view)?
Definitely the guitar ! I'm not as proficient on it as the keyboard, but I find it much more expressive, and a lot more fun, after all apart from the old Roland SH-101 you cant swing a keybpard round can you ?
2). What has been the biggest challenge in your life?
Personally, it was giving up what I had in England and moving back to Ireland. Very tough and emotional but it was a move I wanted to make. The biggest challenge in music ? I guess that would be overcoming my own self doubt. It's a point where you say 'to hell with it, this is what I do, I'm good at it and I love doing it and that's all that matters !' ..after that what others think comes second.
3). What song you can listen to again and again?
Quite a few.. 'Float On' by Mighty Mouse, 'Geraldine' by Glasvegas, 'The Reason' Hoobastank & 'North And South Of The River' by Christy Moore.. I'll stop there haha..
4). What is your favorite feature on R&R?
The podcast on ArenaCast is great ! The chance for unsigned artists like myself to have their work recognised and featured in front of a huge audience is badly needed, and the podcast offers just that !
5). If you could ask one question to the leader of your country, what would it be?
Will you please invest in a future for our youth.. they are not products to be grown and taught and then exported around the world.
