Featured Artist interview: Danny Flo (E72)

About: Danny Flo from Tehachapi

"Danny Flo grew up in the little town of Tehachapi, CA. Starting songwriting at age 14, he since has played shows, written over 100 songs, attended Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA. He still plays shows here and there, and still hopes to make performing a living"

1). What do you think will happen to music in 50 years?
I'm hoping it will change for the better. I think in the last 50 years the music industry has gone off the deep end. It used to be about raw talent, and musicianship. Now it's about who can sell the most albums and wear the least amount of cloths. Over the years we've been blessed by great musicians and singers such as Frank Sinatra, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Led Zepplin, AC/DC, Frank Zappa, , Guns N' Roses, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Stevie Ray Vaughn to name a few. Now when I go to the store, or turn on the T.V. all I see is Hannah Montana, Kesha, Lil Wayne, etc. When Miley Cyrus sells more albums than bands like Avenged Sevenfold, Saving Abel; or great singers like Michael Bublé, or great musicians like Chris Botti, America needs to wake up. I'm hoping we'll get a surge of great music going again, by musicians who've worked hard to get to the top. That's what should happen now, and continue into the next 50 years.

2). What are the main difficulties for being a musician in your country?
Exposure. There are so many people trying to do the same thing you are, and only a few can make a good living doing it. Also, we are more concerned with looks, rather than music. A beautiful girl with limited vocal talent that sings covers can make it farther than the average singer-songwriter that plays their own instrument, sings, and writes because we hear what we see.

3). Would you like your children to become musicians, just like you do? Why yes or why not?
I would love my children to play music. Playing music is a great outlet. If you're having a bad day, you can just pick up your guitar and play away. That's how most great songs are written. It's also proven that being musically inclined expands brain function. It's also a lot of fun. So really, I wouldn't have a reason to not want my kids to play music.

4). What is the instrument of your dream? (type/brand/model)
Custom made PRS SC58 Gold top with a maple neck being played through a Bogner.

5). If you could raise one music idol from the dead – who would it be?
Stevie Ray! He is such an inspiration to my playing, and it's a tragedy he had to go. Long live SRV!
