The Deepest Ocean: Canadian indie rock band (E104)

About: The Deepest Ocean

The Deepest Ocean: Calgary, Canada based indie rock band from E104 of ArenaCast

When we asked "How did you come up with your band name?" they answered: "There are a couple of things. We were listening to "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi" by Radiohead and the song says "in the deepest of the ocean/at the bottom of the sea/your eyes/they turn on me....I'd be crazy not to follow/follow where you lead" and that just sort of spoke to that. This verse also led us to a verse from the Bible where it says that God's love is deeper than the deepest of oceans".
I would like to add that the music of "The deepest Oucean" is as emblematic as the bandname. Nuff said! Let`s listening to their songs and read the brief interview!

1. How do you see yourself in 5 years? What is your main goal as a band?
It's hard for anybody to say where they will be in five years, especially with how up and down the music industry can be, but in five years we see ourselves as having two or three full length albums as well as playing as supporting acts for bigger international bands that come to our city as well as headlining our own, smaller, national and international tours.

2. Can you name some peculiarities that define the music scene in your town/country?
TWe come from a city that is known worldwide for rodeo's and country music and it has been hard to break through that stigma, however in the last few years there has been an outpouring of indie bands, and even a breakthrough in the hip hop scene by our good friend Transit. The biggest peculiarity is that nobody seems to get out of Calgary.

3.What do you think of episode 104? Which of the other featured songs do you like the most?
Aside from all the amazing music it was fantastic listening to the commentary by DJ Fritz Hammond. His humour and personal stories made it all much more enjoyable to listen to. However it is very difficult to decide which other band/artist we like most as they were all so talented, but we will have to go with Lost by Painting Elephants. Haunting melodies tied with melodic guitar lines and soft yet powerful vocals always makes for a fantastic combination.

4.Is there a story behind your song Come Now Sleep?
This song wasn't actually originally written for us. Our lead singer Matt has an acoustic side-project that he has been doing on his own for years called Coastlines, however Matt decided it needed the fuller sound of the band to really have the impact he wanted.
Anyways, when the song was written there were a number of things going on in Matt's life that he was struggling with. He was incredibly stressed because of school and music which lead to an inability to sleep and mild insomnia. Matt was also wrestling with his faith a bit at this time.
So, this song comes from Matt struggling to accept that God loves him regardless of his issues and mistakes. This song is Matt expressing himself calling out to God to grab hold of him and pull him in even at his darkest moment.

5.Please share your nearest plans. What are you currently working on?
We don't really have anything going on until March and we've got a few big events.
We will be opening for the CD release of one of the biggest hip-hop acts in Alberta (Natural Ensemble) and then the week after opening for an Indie band from Victoria, Acres of Lions, in Calgary as they make their way across the country. In July we will be recording our first professional EP at Top Floor Recordings in Kelowna, BC.
