Blackwaters: hard rock quintet from South Wales, UK (E112)

About: Blackwaters

Blackwaters: unsigned hard rock quintet from South Wales, UK played in E112 of the ArenaCast

"The band name came about right at the start of the project. The band started with Jeff and Mikey meeting through a musicians wanted ad's website, which then grew into a threesome with our former bassist Craig joining shortly after. We were in the process of writing songs, trying to put stuff together and Jeff was keen to give the band a name. Mikey was sure it had to have Black in the title, but couldn't quite strike the right combination of words to follow. After a week or two of thinking up random names Jeff came to practice and suggested Blackwaters as he'd seen a river that was black as coal on his way to practice, which had inspired the name. It instantly seemed to feel like it was right and made sense, we kept trying to think up other names but it just didn't quite sound right so Blackwaters 'stuck'"

1. How do you see yourself in 5 years? What is your main goal as a band?
It's difficult to paint a picture of the future at the moment, because we're still developing as a new band given the fairly recent line up changes, but certainly we want the band to succeed and we're hoping that we can break through and play some truely epic shows. We just love to play and we would kill for the chance to get out there and do this for a living! We truely love it and we're humbled by all the support we've received this far. Long may it continue.

2. Can you name some peculiarities that define the music scene in your town/country?
The music scene from our little patch of the world is very rock and metal orientated, there are lots of very good musicians and lots of veriety, but this seems to be the main focus that's been around for some time now. The one thing we love about Wales is how truely passionate we all are about music, we love it here, and people love to watch bands play no matter who you are.

3. What do you think of episode 112? Which of the other featured songs do you like the most?
It was a really great epsiode and highlighted some very good and talented musicians from around the world. Favourites for us were Black Oak, In Confesso and Teak.

4. Is there a story behind your song "Take Cover"?
The story behind Take Cover is one of a young rebellious youth, always ending up in some sort of trouble and having to fight their way out of it. It was an exaggeration of a story we once heard about a guy who was having difficulties with his peers, always being picked on etc until one day he decides to fight back and then he is seen as 'the wild one', with a new confidence had risen there was no stopping him and it ends up being a story about finding the truth in yourself, that we all have a little monster inside us wanting to break out, it's just finding the right motivation for it!

5. Please share your nearest plans. What are you currently working on?
Currently we're looking forward to playing a charity gig we have lined up in October, it should be a day of great bands and lots of fun so we're hoping there will be a big crowd to play for. After that we're probably going to take a short break as our guitarist has a baby due any time in October, so for a little while we're going to focus on writing new material. In the new year we're looking to record our debut album, so we'll be working hard next year to promote that and get our songs heard.

Thank you for featuring our song on your show, please do check out our website or you can hear our songs on our soundcloud page.
Keep your ears peeled for news and new material!
Thanks guys!

  1. Nice blog and interesting fellow welsh band. We are an alternative band from south wales and we were wondering if we could maybe get your opinions on our work. I've included a link in this comment straight to a list of our videos ( I hope you don't mind ) Thanks in advance, Chris
